Prasanna and Kalaiyarasan come together on screen for the first time. The movie speaks about friendship, romance and revenge. Directed by debutant M Nagarajan, Kaalakoothu is set in Madurai. A journey of joy, anger and disappointment, the movie begins on a slow note and gathers momentum as it progresses.

The movie is woven around Kalaiyarasan (Hari) and Eswar (Prasanna). An orphan Eswar grows up with Hari, who loses his mother at a very young age. They become close friends.

The friends fall in love with girls from the same town. Gayathri (Dhansika) falls for Hari, while Revathi (Srushti) is head over heela for Eshwar. Things go well for them, untill an unfortunate incident involving Eswar threatens their survival.

Meanwhile Revathi’s father decides to marry his daughter to his relative. But there is a twist in the tale and the movie ends with a shocking climax sure to evoke tears in our eyes.

Prasanna and Kalaiyarasan have utilised the opportunity to give their best. They emote and pour out anger and agony well through their eyes. They bond well as Madurai men well.Dhanshika sparkles in her role, while Srushti Dange has very little to do.

Justin Prabhakaran’s music has been used well by Nagarajan and the songs are catchy. The movie has some catchy dialogues  about friendship and the need for relationships to stay calm in life is well highlighted.

The movie has fun elements and emotional aspects too. All said, Kaalakoothu deserves a serious watch.
