Double taxation row: No new film releases in Today

No new movies were released today as a protest against the levy of 10 per cent local body tax on new releases in cinema halls by the State government.

A day ago, the office-bearers of Tamil Film Producers Council (THPC), Tamilnadu Distributors Association and Tamilnadu Theatre Owners Association have announced that no new movies would be released today.

'We had already made our requests to the government not to impose any new tax. Levy of 10 per cent local body tax from 27 September came as a big shock for the industry,' said TFPC president and actor Vishal Krishna .

'The cinema industry cannot operate at this position. In today's situation producers have to pay 40 per cent tax to the government, it is impossible for us to operate. There will not be any new movies from this Friday,' he said.
