Jayalalithaa issues order to celebrate 100th anniversary of first Tamil actress

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has issued order to conduct the 100th anniversary of TP Rajalakshmi, first Tamil actress – Film Director. 

TP Rajalakshmi was in peak in South Indian cinema.  TP Rajalakshmi was born in Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur district in 1911. She was daughter of Panchapakesa Sastri and Meenakshi Ammal.  As per old traditions, she was married at the age of 7.  But, the marriage was broken. 

From very since her younger days, TP Rajalakshmi was in drama troop. She did main role in dramas by MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar as ‘Pavalakodi’ and ‘Kovalan’.  TP Rajalakshmi set foot into cine field through ‘Kovalan’ when she was aged 18. She did the character of Madhavi in the movie. 

TP Rajalakshmi did role in first Tamil talkie ‘Kalidas’.  Further, through her production unit ‘Rajam Talkies’, she produced ‘Miss Kamala’ for which she did story, screenplay and dialogues.

TP Rajalakshmi married TV Sundaram who did movies with her. 


TP Rajalakshmi, who was popular in cinema for 20 years, passed away in 1964.  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has issued order to celebrate TP Rajalakshmi’s 100th anniversary on September 19th.
