Kamal Haasan incurs heavy loss as ‘‘Vishwaroopam’’ is banned from release

Due to protests from Muslim outfits, Kamal Haasan’s movie ‘‘Vishwaroopam’’ did not hit screens as per schedule on January 25th.   Tamil Nadu government has imposed ban on release of the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ for two weeks.  The movie hit screens in places abroad and in Indian states as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka.  But, due to strong protest from Muslims, the movie’s screening was halted in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

There was agreement to screen the movie in 40 theatres in Karnataka.  Reservations were opened in 12 theatres in Bangalore. Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash imposed ban upon screening of the movie in Bangalore.   Last evening, the Police Commissioner viewed the movie ‘‘Vishwaroopam’’.  So far, the Police Commissioner has not arrived at decision regarding screening of the movie in Bangalore.

Yesterday, clash erupted between two groups in Badravathy, Karnataka, as the movie was screened in theatre there.  The Police Commissioner has not arrived at a decision as he takes into account the clash.   Movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ hit screens in 82 theatres in Kerala on Jan 25th.  As the first show was over, Muslims indulged in agitation.  So, the movie was banned from release in some theatres.   The next day, as some Hindu outfits and communist party cadres gave support, the movie was screened in several theatres in Kerala.

But still, movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ has not been released fully in Kerala.   Like in Karnataka and Kerala, movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ was screened in several theatres in Andhra.  As the first show was over, Muslim outfits in Andhra approached Home Minister Sabeetha Indira Reddy and conveyed their protest against the movie.    Also, Muslim outfits warned that they would indulge in protest if the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ is not banned from release.  So, Minister Sabeetha imposed ban upon screening of the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’.  Due to the ban, screening of the movie did not continue in any of the theatres in Andhra.    Reservations had been made in more than 100 theatres in Andhra and Karnataka for movie ‘Vishwaroopam’.  The movie was screened for just one day, on Jan 25th in theatres in those states.   The situation was such that the movie could not be screened from the next day.  So, temporarily, they got old movies and screened those movies.  As there is no confirmation as to whether the ban upon ‘Vishwaroopam’ would be lifted, theatre owners there are in a tight corner.   Except in few theatres in Kerala, there is ban upon screening of the movie in theatres elsewhere.

The interim stay upon the movie which started in Tamil Nadu is now spreading to other countries.  It is reported that after viewing the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ in Malaysia, some people protested against the movie.   The Malaysian Government issued order to suspend screening of the movie.  Malaysian distributor A Ramalingam confirmed the suspension of screening.  From Saturday, not one theatre in Malaysia screened the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’. As the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ could not be screened, Kamal Haasan, distributors and theatre owners have incurred heavy loss.  There has been a loss of Rs. 30 crore. Distributor for Multimedia Company from Mumbai said that the loss would increase if the ban upon the movie lasts.  Distributor Sankararaju from Karnataka and Prakash Reddy from Andhra said that the loss has increased.   Not alone Kamal Haasan fans, but also moviegoers in general had reserved tickets for the first day first show.  Now, as the ban has been imposed, fans and moviegoers are disappointed.

In some cities, fans were able to get back an amount lesser than what they had paid.  Thus, fans have also incurred loss.   Amidst all these, the movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ has had tremendous welcome in theatres in London.  It is to be noted that, within the last three days, box-office collection in London theatres has been Rs 57 lakhs.
