Actor Thilakan who has done villain and character roles in Malayalam and Tamil passed away today. He was aged 77.
Recently, as Thilakan was in shooting for a Malayalam movie, he sustained a minor injury. Following the injury, Thilakan was admitted in a hospital. There, he suffered health setback. Doctors monitored his condition closely. Few days back, Thilakan suffered breathing problem. Doctors treated Thilakan with modern medical life-saving equipments. But, Thilakan passed away this morning not responding to treatment.
Thilakan was born in Ayiroor village, in the vicinity of Patthanamthitta, Kerala on July 15th, 1935. Thilakan began his cine career as a theater artiste and later joined art group in Kerala. Following that, he joined drama troop run by Kalakendra, and BJ Antony. Other than these, Thilakan worked for All India Radio. In 1972, Thilakan debuted into cine field through movie ‘Gandarvachetram’. Following that, Thilakan did movies as Periyaar, Yavanika, Yatra and Panjaangini. In Tamil, Thilakan joined hands with Vijaykanth for ‘Chatriyan’ and joined hands with Karthik for Mettukudi. With Arjun, Thilakan joined hands for movie ‘Aayudhapoojai’. Also, he has acted in movies including Pazhasiraja.
Thilakan, who has acted in more than 200 movies, received national award twice, Kerala state government award nine times, and has won Film-fare awards twice. Further, Thilakan received Padmasree award in 2009.
Late Thilakan’s body was taken from hospital to his residence. His body has been placed there for homage. Kerala celebrities are conveying condolence and are paying homage following Thilakan’s demise. Thilakan is survived by his sons Shaji, Shaami, Sibu and Shobi, and daughters Sonia and Shobia. His funeral rites are to be held this evening.
