Petition against Lingaa withdrawn

The Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissed as withdrawn a public interest litigation (PIL) filed against granting entertainment tax exemption to Rajinikanth-starrer Lingaa .

The first Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, dismissed the petition filed by V. Amritharaj of Salem after hearing arguments.

The petitioner had said that Lingaa is not a Tamil word, but a Sanskrit name and according to a 2006 State government notification, only Tamil films with titles in that language and films that uphold Tamil culture could be granted exemption from entertainment tax.

He said the commercial taxes secretary and commissioner of commercial taxes were in favour of the film’s producers and had granted exemption.
