Petitioner withdraws habeas corpus petition in case with regard to Anjali

Since petitioner withdrew the habeas corpus petition demanding that Anjali be presented in the court, Chennai High Court dismissed the petition.

Bharathi Devi, aged 42, from Valasaravakkam, Chennai, filed habeas corpus petition with Chennai High Court. The petition reads as follows: -

‘Anjali alias Bala alias Tripura Sundari, aged 27, is my sister Parvathi Devi’s daughter.  I adopted Anjali.  I underwent the relevant formalities in the Registrar Office in December 2003. Anjali is an actress.  Tamil movie ‘Satham Indri Muthamidu’ is Anjali’s first movie.  Then, Anjali started doing Tamil and Telugu movies.  Currently, Anjali is doing Telugu movie ‘Balupu’.  For the movie shooting, she went to Hyderabad on March 31st with my husband.’

‘In Hyderabad, both booked room in Daspalla Hotel and stayed.  In a development, as my husband woke up in the morning on April 8th, he found Anjali missing.  A complaint was filed with the police.’

‘I filed complaint with Valasaravakkam police and Chennai Police Commissioner on April 10th.  A case was registered.  But, no efforts were taken to rescue Anjali.’

‘I fear that there is danger to Anjali’s life. Since it is few days since Anjali disappeared, I doubt whether she is alive.  So order should be issued to the police to trace her.’

‘The petition came for hearing in the presence of magistrates as V Dhanabalan, CT Selvam.  On behalf of Anjali, elderly lawyer R Shanmugasundaram, and lawyer Mukundan presented themselves.  On behalf of government, lawyer Thambidurai presented himself in the court.’

Lawyer Thambidurai argued that Anjali appeared before Bangalore police and gave statement. So, it cannot be said that she has been illegally confined, he added.

Lawyer Shanmugasundaram, who appeared on behalf of Anjali said ‘After filing habeas corpus petition here, Bharathi Devi filed petition in another court demanding compensation.  This cannot be accepted.’

Then magistrates opined that the habeas corpus petition should not be a wrong one.  Following that, Bharathi Devi’s side said that they are withdrawing the petition.  So, magistrates issued order to dismiss the habeas corpus petition.
