Power restored in Kamal’s office in Alwarpet after eight years

Residents of Eldams Road in Alwarpet heaved a sigh of relief as power supply was finally restored late on Tuesday evening. With rains pounding the city, power was
switched off in the neighbourhood about eight days back.

There were some murmurs that the power was not restored in the area despite the rains relenting and water receding only because actor Kamal Haasan, whose office is situated in the corner of Eldams road, recently criticised the State government’s response to the unfolding  disaster.

The denial of power for so many days was seen as a way to “punish” the actor. However, a senior official of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation
denied these theories.

He pointed out that water stagnation and a faulty underground cable were reasons for the extended power cut. Last week, Mr. Haasan told an online portal that the “whole system has collapsed.”

After the State’s Finance minister, O. Paneerselvam, lashed out at him in a six-page statement, the actor clarified that he had not given an exclusive interview to the
portal. “I had only written a letter to a friend, who is a reporter, through e-mail,”

he said, adding, “I was only lamenting about the disaster that had befallen Tamil Nadu. ”He also underlined that the letter did not mention the government of Tamil Nadu or raise questions about how tax money was being used.
