Saira Banu opens up about Dilip Kumar who turned 90

Actor Dilip kumar was a superstar between 1940 and 1960. People of different age groups were attracted by his acting. He was an expert in acting in melancholic roles. He would bring sorrow before our eyes with great ease. Due to this, Bollywood fans called him as “hero of melancholic roles”.  

Some of the current crop of actors too follows Dilip kumar’s style. Dilip kumar attracted the fans through his different style of acting.

As an example to this, Bollywood superstars including Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan had told that they had watched Dilip kumar’s films without fail and learnt the nuances of acting from him.

Actor Dilip kumar was born in Peshawar in Pakistan in December 11, 1922. His real name is Yusuf Khan. Later he came to Mumbai. As a youth he started his own business. At that time Devika Rani, the wife of Mumbai Talkie’s head came to the market for shopping. She saw Yusuf Khan there only.

Yusuf Khan immediately attracted the attention of Devika Rani through his unique personality and expressive eyes. Devika Rani gave her visiting card to him and asked him to meet her.

In this way, Yusuf Khan became Dilip kumar, a historic actor in Hindi cinema. Dilip kumar’s first film “Jwar Bhata” flopped in an unexpected manner. Even then he tried again without losing hope.

During 1949 Dilip kumar had the chance to act with popular actor Raj Kappor in Mehboob Khan’s film “Andaaz”. He made use of that opportunity and exhibited his talents. It was a triangular love story. The film which was created with romance and sorrow in a beautiful manner was enhanced through the realistic and emotional acting of Dilip kumar.

The fans of Bollywood films were enamored by Dilip kumar’s acting. Moreover he had given hits to Bollywood through films including Naya Daur, Ganga Jamuna, Madhumathi, Taraana, Mughal-E-Azam, Kohinoor, Leader, Ram Aur Shyam, Shakti and Qila.

He married Saira Banu who was paired with him in Hindi films. Saira Banu, who is 68 now, says about her husband, “ Dilip kumar had reached 90 years now. He is a very gentle person. I started to love him in the age of 12. I got married to him during the age of 22. We love each other for the past 46 years.

He would not allow me to even catch his hands in public places. He is such a person. This year has immersed us in sorrow because many of our cine friends passed away. Hence we are not going to celebrate his birthday in a grand manner. We have decided to celebrate it in a simple manner in our house.”
