Sivaji memorial inaugurated

A memorial in honour of legendary Tamil thespian Sivaji Ganesan was unveiled here yesterday on his birth anniversary by the State government.

Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam, State Ministers D Jayakumar and Kadambur Raju, actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Nadigar Sangam chief Nasser, Tamil Film Producers Council president Vishal, Sivaji Ganesan's sons Ramkumar and Prabhu among others took part.

The memorial, built at a cost of Rs 2.80 crore at Adyar locality, also celebrities from the film industry, MPs and MLAs attending the event.

In 2015, then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced in the Assembly that a memorial will be built honouring Sivaji Ganesan, who ruled the Tamil film world since 1950s.

A winner of the coveted Dada Saheb Phalke award, Sivaji Ganesan had acted in over 300 films most of which were big hits.

He passed away on 21 July, 2001.The 28,300 sq ft memorial has been built by the Public Works Department in the Dravidian style of architecture.

A bronze statue of the late actor, removed from Kamarajar Salai abutting the Marina Beach here following a court directive, was unveiled at the memorial.

Heaping laurels on Sivaji Ganesan the Deputy Chief Minister, said, 'His Tamil diction, emotional acting and baritone voice won him the title Nadigar Thilagam.

His wonderful performance in films like Veera Pandiya Kattabomman, Thiruvilayadal, Kappalotiya Thamizhan, Manohara and Parasakthi is staying fresh in our hearts.'
