Supreme Court refuses to lift ban on ‘Dam 999’ in Tamil Nadu

The Supreme Court has issued strict order against release of movie ‘Dam 999’ in Tamil Nadu.Also, Tamil Nadu Government banned release of movie ‘Dam 999’.


The movie ‘Dam 999’ was scheduled for release on November 25th, 2011. The movie depicts thesuffering of people as dam breaks and causes flood. One day prior to release of the movie, on24th, the Tamil Nadu Government banned the movie’s release.


The movie centres the Mullai Periyaar issue between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Government toldthat if the movie is released there would be law and order problem in Tamil Nadu. The ban isstill in vogue.


Finally, the movie was banned for three months from November 30th. The producer – directorfor the movie Sohan Rai filed a complaint petition with the Supreme Court. He said in thepetition that the movie has been screened in states other than Tamil Nadu. So, the ban shouldbe lifted, said Sohan Rai in his petition.


The Supreme Court dismissed the petition. ‘The court cannot consider individual rights nottaking into account the prevalent fear in the state. We cannot be blind to dissatisfaction of thestate. The case is purely legal. We have to respect the feelings of masses’, said the magistrate.
