Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's epic Tamil movie Nayagan is celebrating its 25th anniversary today on October 21 2012.
Nayagan, also known as Nayakan, without any doubt, is one of the greatest movie of all times in Indian cinema history.
It has been 25 years since the movie was released on October 21 1987 to coincide with 1987 Diwali.
Nayagan needs no certification as the world famous Time Magazine, in 2005, included Nayagan in its list of 'All-Time 100 Best Films'.
Nayagan has also been included in The Moving Arts Film Journal greatest films of all time.
Nayagan was also included as one of 20 greatest Indian films of all time. This list emerged from the 'T20 of Indian Cinema' poll in which 20 experts from around the country - 10 young filmmakers and 10 seasoned critics and scholars participated.
The film was sent by India for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 60th Academy Awards. However, it was not among the five nominees for the award.
But the movie won 3 National Film Awards in 1988.
Kamal Haasan's performance as Velu Naiker earned him a National Film Award for Best Actor in 1988.
The film also earned the National Award for Best Cinematography to P. C. Sriram and National Award for Best Art Direction to Thotta Tharani.
Only sad thing was, the captain of the ship, Mani Ratnam did not win National Film Awards for best director.
Kamal Haasan contributed a brilliant article about the making of Nayagan in today’s (Oct 21, 2012) The Hindu, one of India's leading English language news paper.
He also released a thanks-giving letter as a gratitude to all the stake holders of the movie such as director Mani Ratnam, music director Ilayaraja, cinematographer P C Sriram, art director Thotta Tharani, actress Saranya Povannan, costume designer Sarika Kamal Hassan, director-writer Muktha Srinivasan and the producer late G Venkateswaran.
Kamal and Mani, please repeat the same magic with a future movie!!!
