Theatres owners end stir

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) is on strike and there are no new releases for this weekend too, theatre owners have called off their stir and cinema halls opened doors today, but saw very little footfalls.

Tamilnadu theatre owners went on an indefinite strike from 16 March demanding that the Tamilnadu government completely remove the local body tax, change license renewal period from three years to one year, and revise theatre maintenance charges to Rs 5 per ticket from the current Rs 1.

Abirami Ramanathan, the president of the Tamilnadu Theatre Owners and Distributors Association, met government officials, representing the Joint Action Committee, and seemed pleased about the outcome.

He shared that the government had assured that the demands would be met soon. This, he said, meant that the strike could be called off. Also another faction of theatre owners led by Pannerselvam too have called off their strike. However, this doesn’t mean that new Tamil films can get released.
