Veteran actress Sukumari passes away

Veteran actress Sukumari, who was being treated for burn injuries following fire accident, passed away.  She was aged 74.  Recently, as Sukumari was lighting lamp in house, her sari caught fire and she sustained burn injuries on body. 

Sukumari was rushed to Global Hospital and was admitted in the emergency ward.  Few days back, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa visited Sukumari in the hospital and enquired well-being with her.  Sukumari had done many movies with Jayalalithaa.  Both were close friends. 


Today, Sukumari passed away following cardiac arrest.  The final rites are to be held tomorrow, on 27.03.13. 

Sukumari was born in 1938 in Nagercoil, which was then under Travancore dynasty.  Sukumari, a relative of popular actresses as Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini, started her career as dance artiste. 

Sukumari staged dance performance in various Sabhas in India.  Sukumari debuted into Tamil cine field through movie ‘Or Iravu’. Sukumari had paired up with Tamil cine giants as Sivaji Ganesan, MGR and Gemini Ganesan.  Sukumari had done 2500 movies in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

Even before fire accident, Sukumari had been into movies.  Last 2011, Sukumari received National Award in co-artiste category.  Other than the award, Sukumari received Padma Shri Award in 2003, and was also presented the Kerala State Award.  Actress Sukumari was popular director Bhimsingh’s wife. She is survived by her son Suresh Bhimsingh.
