Veteran music composer V Dakshinamoorthy no more

Veteran music composer V Dakshinamoorthy, aged 93, passed away on Friday following health setback.

Dakshinamoorthy’s ancestry was Kallidai Kurichi, Tirunelveli district.  Dakshinamoorthy’s family moved to Kerala for livelihood.  Dakshinmamurthy, who resided in Alappuzha, introduced carnatic music in Malayalam cine field. 

Basically, Dakshinamoorthy was a carnatic musician.  He taught carnatic music to singer P Leela.  Dakshinamoorthy received movie chance through Leela’s father. 

Dakshinamoorthy debuted as music composer through ‘Nallathangal’ released in 1948.  Dakshinamoorthy, who turned popular music composer through movie ‘Oru Oodhappu Kan Simittugirathu’, has composed music for many Tamil movies. 

Dakshinamoorthy introduced AR Rahman’s father RK Shekhar in cine field.

Later, AR Rahman, during his youth, had played the keyboard with music composition by Dakshinamoorthy.  Singers as KJ Yesudas, his father Augustine Joseph, and his son Vijay Yesudas have done numbers composed by Dakshinamoorthy. 

For many Malayalam movies, Ilayaraja had played guitar for composition by Dakshinamoorthy. 

Later, Ilayaraja learnt Carnatic music from Dakshinamoorthy for some time.  Also, Ilayaraja’s daughter Bavadharini learnt music from Dakshinamoorthy. 

Management authorities of Krishna temple in Guruvayur chose Dakshinamoorthy to compose music for devotional songs.  In Malayalam cine field, Dakshinamoorthy was addressed as Swamy. 

Dakshinamoorthy had composed music for movies in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. 

Dakshinamoorthy’s body has been placed in his residence in Mylapore for homage.  The final rites are to be carried out on Saturday afternoon.
