Meera making headlines!

Feb 25, 2008, 14:49

Malluwood’s heartthrob Meera Jasmine who has to her names some of best Malluwood films so far gets going with her latest flick ‘Calcutta News’. This film that stars her opposite Dileep is being made by Blessy, the man responsible for her Malluwood entry. In this interview, Meera jasmine talks about her upcoming release.

Here are the excerpts:

How was it shooting for ‘Calcutta News’ in Kolkata?

Awesome. I just loved the place. The locales opted for shooting the film was perfectly apt to suit the verve of the film. Kolkata is a culturally rich city that gives the impression of being the bearer of a different era altogether. Beside our cinematographer S Kumar has done such a superb work with the camera here that it will make the city all the more alive and real onscreen.

Brief us on your role in the film.

In ‘Calcutta News’ I play this naďve small town girl called Krishnapriya who is married and sent to an unfamiliar city. She is illiterate and doesn’t know how to speak Bengali as well. Then she enters a situation that changes the course of her life forever.

During her topsy-turvy ride, she comes across Ajith Thomas, a television reporter of a channel called Calcutta News, played by Dileep. This film is very special since it is laced with a significant social message.

Meera more often than not you are seen doing other regional films apart from Malayalam. Don’t you miss your Malluwood while away on other regional terrains?

Obviously I do. I’ve always maintained that Malluwood is the only place that encourages true talents. This industry may be less profitable so far as business is concerned, but this has never stopped it from making hardcore realistic films. I may dabble with other regional films, but I can’t deny that its Malluwood that has given me some of my best roles so far.

Your Vinodayathra and Ore Kadal have been immensely appreciated by all. Your say.

I’m glad that I got to be a part of such excellent endeavors. It always feels great to act in your native films. Both Vinodayathra and Ore Kadal had immensely strong roles that gave me ample scope to exhibit my skills.

You see Malluwood is quite unlike Tollywood that believes to trail on set patterns. Today when I look back at films made during the seventies and the eighties, I wonder if we’ll ever be able to produce such great films again. Malluwood is truly matchless.

Apparently it was Blessy who introduced you to Malluwood. Then what took him so long to cast you in his film?

Well, it’s true that Blessy identified my ability as an actress and brought me into Malluwood. But I don’t think it’s been too late since he started directing. Beside my role in the film is such mind-blowing that I feel that the wait has been worth the film. I think Blessy was saving the best for me (smiles).

Do you tend to visualize your character before you actually start shooting for it?

Not really. Most of the time it is spontaneous. I believe in spur-of-the-moment acting. And quite luckily, I’ve been fortunate enough to grab performance-oriented roles so far.

Who have been your inspirations from the industry?

There are quite a few. I adored Smita Patil and also I’m a huge fan of Jaya Bachchan. Among the contemporaries, I like Tabu.
