    Siemens Communications Inc. yesterday announced a software-based contact center product that's designed to work with any call center switching platform. The OpenScape Contact Center, which serves about 60 contact center agents, costs about $177,500, said Al Baker, vice president of global customer relations management products at Boca Raton, Fla.-based Siemens Communications, a subsidiary of Siemens AG.

    A Texas woman has filed a class-action lawsuit against Blockbuster Inc. over the video rental company's participation in Facebook's Beacon program. The lawsuit, filed last week by Dallas County resident Cathryn Elaine Harris, accuses Blockbuster of breaking the provisions of the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1998. The rarely invoked act basically prohibits movie rental companies such as Blockbuster

    Seattle-based start-up Skytap Inc. is set to debut virtual labs-as-a-service software that it said will let development teams create multiple test machines in various configurations without tying up hardware. Although virtualization has often been linked with server consolidation, programmers have used the technology for years to test and debug software. Users can employ virtualization to create test machines in various configurations and put fewer demands on hardware.

  • FCC calls for mobile alert system

    The Federal Communications Commission is moving to set up a system that would send text alerts to people's mobile phones in case of natural disasters and other emergencies. With an order released Wednesday, the FCC adopted technical requirements for transmission of the alerts, which would require the cooperation of mobile operators.

    "Honey, I'm on a plane" will be increasingly overheard on flights -- much to the annoyance of some passengers -- as the European Commission on Monday will unveil a pan-European approach to licensing in-flight calls. The European Union executive will offer a harmonized framework for mobile communications on aircraft so passengers can make and receive calls, text messages and use e-mail with their own mobile phones, a commission source said.

  • Judge puts stop to more 'Vista Capable' insider e-mails

    A federal judge last week granted Microsoft's request to suspend the "Vista Capable" lawsuit while an appeals court reviews her decision to give the case class-action status. The move blocks, for now, any new disclosure of insider e-mails by Microsoft employees, such as the ones made public in February, or the release of internal messages from the nearly 30 companies and people who had been subpoenaed and ordered to deliver documents.
