An evil sorcerer (Suresh Bala) gets hold of a powerful 'Mantra' and sacrifices 27 babies, each born under a different star. He is ready for the final ritual that would make him the master of the universe when he learns that there is yet another star left. He has to find a baby born under that particular star and sacrifice the child. He goes in search of the baby who turns out to be his own grandson. Born to his son Pratap (Venu) and Durga (Roja) daughter of the wealthy
Zamindar.
He bides his time and gets his chance when Durga dies. The sorcerer leaves his body and enters her body about to be cremated. The villagers are stunned to see the dead woman come alive. Durga's restless spirit hovering around the place manages to warn best friend Ganga (Suvalakshmi) about the Sorcerer's game. But Ganga is helpless, and the spirit then enters the sorcerer's lifeless body and confronts the enemy. A gripping drama ensues, where even gods jump into the fray to fight against the evil.
Suresh Bala leaves his mark as the diabolical sorcerer. But it is Roja all the way. Whether as the playful girl of the first part or the evil force in the concluding part Roja revels in her role.
So, here is yet another good-versus-evil and Goddess-versus-Satan kind of film. But the script is interesting, the characters colourful, there are some twists and turns and the graphics blend well with the narration. So what if some of them are borrowed from 'Mummy'. The dubbing in many scenes is less than satisfactory, and at times Tamil seems to have been dubbed on Telugu lip movement. It seems to be a season for sociomythologicals and 'Pottu Amman' is yet another on the list.
