Movie: Sudanthiram

Movie Sudanthiram  Director Rajkapoor   Producer K.R.G.Movies International

A lukewarm fare!

Rajkapoor, the director of 'Sudanthiram' has taken the audience for a right royal ride. True, the story is not credited to anyone, yet when you copy a film almost scene by scene is it not mandatory at least to acknowledge the source? 'Sudanthiram' is a remake of the Amir Khan- Rani Mukherjee starrer hit Hindi film 'Ghulam' but nowhere is it mentioned and what has emerged is a deplorably poor copy too.

For those who haven't seen 'Ghulam' : The story of 'Sudanthiram' goes thus - Viswa (Arjun) is the younger brother of Raghu (Raghuvaran) who is in the payroll of the local Don Shobhraj who thrives on extortion and match fixing etc. He, abetted by Raghu makes Viswa a pawn to lure Vikram who is the lone crusader against him to a lonely place. Viswa becomes an eye witness to the ruthless murder of Vikram.

Viswa later comes to know that Vikram is his girl friend Vidya's (Rambha) brother. When he confesses to Vidya she shuns him. Viswa vows to thwart Shobhraj's attempts to take over the colony and bring him to book for Vikram's murder and as the sole eye-witness gives his statement against the against the Don. He is assisted by advocate Padmini who herself has a score to settle with the Don. Raghu is mercilessly killed by Shobhraj. How Viswa takes on the mighty Don single-handedly and makes him bite dust makes the rest of the story.

One pities Arjun who has done a good job in the lead role, but comparison to Amir Khan is inevitable. Arjun lacks the fresh, young look and innocent demeanour of Amir which are important to the delineation of the character. And the less said about Rambha the better. Apart from exposing her natural assets sparingly she does nothing. Radhika, as 'Padmini', and Raghuvaran are impressive.

Music is below average and Kanalkannan's fight sequences lack punch (pun intended).
