Thaali Kaatha Kaliamman

Director: Somasunder
Cast: Prabhu, Sanghavi, Kausalya, Pandiarajan, Alex, Manorama, Manivannan, Bhanupriya.

It is the tussle between the restless spirit of a dead girl who tries to fulfill her unfulfilled desires, and the Goddess who tries to protect her devotee who is the target of the spirit. Bose, a journalist, goes with his cousin Pandi (Prabhu - Pandiarajan) to a village to investigate a mystery related to the presiding deity of the place, the Goddess Kaliamman. Bose meets the comely Karpagam (Kausalya), rescues her from the harassment of her cousin and the villagers, and marries the orphan girl. But when he returns home and enters his bedroom, he finds a strange girl waiting there instead of his wife. The audience is taken on a trip of the past where Bose and Ramya (Sanghavi) were in love. Fearing her father's wrath, the duo gets married secretly. But Ramya's father appears on the scene, bashes up Bose who is sent to the hospital in a bad state. A defiant Ramya takes her own life. Bose suffers from partial amnesia and doesn't remember this episode in his life. Ramya, who had committed suicide before she could consummate her marriage, had retuned to fulfill her unfulfilled desires, and planned to use Karpagam's body as her physical medium. Trying to prevent this, is Bose and the Goddess.

It is an old-style treatment that reminds one of films of yore. But mercifully there are no voyeuristic scenes nor puerile comedy track. The early part of the film is interesting and a fine twist is given to the story when Ramya enters the scene. But the latter part is insipid and predictable. Prabhu does whatever he is expected to do. Kausalya is just about adequate. Pandiarajan appears with Prabhu in the earlier scenes, and as the narration progresses one sees less and less of him, till he completely disappears. The revelation is Sanghavi. Taking her role quite seriously, Sanghavi performs creditably and looks good too. Bhanupriya as 'Amman' is talent wasted, for 'Amman' appears only in the last scene, does a few quick, violent dance steps, throws some furious glances at the disobedient spirit - Ramya, and the movie ends soon after.
