Veteran playback singer PB Srinivas no more

PB Srinivas, veteran playback singer in Tamil cinema had done more than thousand numbers in 12 languages including Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.

For the past few days, PB Srinivasan had been suffering from health setback.  He was undergoing treatment in his residence at CIT Nagar, Chennai.  Yesterday, PB Srinivas suffered cardiac arrest and he passed away.  He was aged 82. 

PB Srinivasan, who hailed from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, had keen interest in music very since his younger days.  A family friend, who was also a veena artiste, brought PB Srinivas to Chennai. 

PB Srinivas did numbers with two to three lines as lyrics for movie ‘Mister Samplath’, released in 1952. 

Numbers in movie ‘Jaadhagam’, made in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada won him much acclaim.  Numbers in movies as Viduthalai, Prema Paasam, Aduttha Veetu Pen, helped him gain firm foothold as playback singer.  Numbers as ‘Paal Vannam Paruvam Kandu’, ‘Ennarugae Nee Irunthaal’, ‘Pon Onru Kanden’, ‘Mayakkamaa Kalakkamaa’, and ‘Nilavukku En Mel Ennadi Kobam’ earned name and fame for PB Srinivas. 

PB Srinivas did numbers in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and Konkani.  PB Srinivas did playback singing for actors as MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, NTR, Nageswara Rao, and Kantha Rao.  Particularly, for Gemini Ganesan, PB Srinivas did many numbers.  PB Srinivas, an outstanding singer, was well-versed in writing poetry. 

PB Srinivas did number for movie ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ directed by Selvaraghavan, and which was released in 2010.  PB Srinivas received the Kalaimamani Award from Tamil Nadu government. 

PB Srinivas’s body has been placed for homage in his residence at CIT Nagar.  Cine professionals including singers as S Janaki, P Suseela, music composer Shankar Ganesh, lyricist Vaali paid homage to PB Srinivas’s body. 

PB Srinivas is survived by his wife Janaki, four sons and one daughter.  The final rites are to be held in Kannamapettai mortuary on Monday. 

Condolence message released by Governor K Rosaiah on Sunday: -

The death of PB Srinivas has caused shock.  PB Srinivas, who had sweet voice, gained place in hearts of fans through his playback singing in many languages. 

Also, his spiritual songs won him much acclaim across the globe. 

The passing away of such a wonderful singer has created a void in cine field.  I convey my condolences to his family and fans. 

Condolence message by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday: -
‘I was aggrieved upon hearing news that PB Srinivas is no more.  He gained a place in hearts of fans through his singing in 12 languages.  His songs are evergreen.  PB Srinvas brought in a new trend through his sweet voice.  The death of PB Srinivas is an irreparable loss for the cine field.’
